Mapping Memories by HASTINGS & PAYNE

Like the Cartographers before us, this piece is our attempt to map that which we've discovered, and share it with the world.  Whereas a traditional cartographer drew his maps from the landscape which he traveled, we draw ours from a voyage of the mind, tracking down lost memories and resurrecting them in the form of a photograph, which we've laid out in a map to share with the viewer. The dugout canoe was used by Lewis & Clark in their journey of discovery across america, carrying them to the places which they then translated  into maps. Our dugout canoe completes the second half of such a process, bringing the map back home to share with others. Our photos span more than a century, as do our various printing process. Using everything from Dan Dyke and Cyanotype prints, originally used in the 1800's, to less traditional printing techniques such as digitally printed iron on transfers, xerox transfers, and even hand painted transparency's we've woven a web of interlinking memories and mediums for our viewers enjoyment.
